History of the Band
The Scarlet and Black Bagpipe Band is located in Cedar City, Utah. The Band was originally founded and started by C. David Nyman, Chairman of the Department of Music at Southern Utah State University, with the aide of the University President, Gerald R. Sherratt, and aided by David Barclay of the Utah Pipe Band in 1984.
The Scarlet and Black Pipe Band was modeled after the Cold Stream Guard Band, which is the Queens Band at the Buckingham Palace. Professor Nyman went to London and spent time conducting and working with the Cold Stream Guards and their Pipe Band in order to make the band authentic in all respects. The Scarlet and Black Bagpipe Band played as an integral part of the Scarlet and Black Ceremonial Band. All of the instruments were authentic British as well as the uniforms.
This unique organization played all over the West competing at Highland festivals in such places as Estes Park, Colorado, Tucson, Arizona and was one of 13 University Bands that was invited to and pa rticipate in the 100th Anniversary of Coca Cola in Atlanta, Georgia. During Nyman's tenure as Band Master, his Drum Majors won every competition that they competed in. Since Nyman's retirement the Bagpipe Band has been performing off and on for various events throughout Southern Utah. The Bagpipe Band was reorganized in 2007 by Bruce Barclay (the original Pipe Major of the Scarlet and Black and the son of David Barclay) and Elizabeth and Alan Gudmundson.
